Second-year undergraduates took the spotlight as they presented their System Development Projects on **15 July 2026** at the Department of Industrial Management, University of Kelaniya, marking a significant milestone in applying classroom knowledge to real-world software development. Through these projects, students demonstrated not only their technical expertise but also their ability to solve practical problems, manage project scope, communicate ideas effectively, and develop the professional skills expected in the IT and management industries. Evaluated by a distinguished panel of academic staff and industry experts, the presentations provided students with valuable insights into industry expectations, innovation, user-centered design, and professional presentation standards. We extend our sincere appreciation to all industry evaluators and our senior and junior staff members for their time, expertise, and constructive feedback, which made this a truly enriching and career-focused learning experience. The Department of Industrial Management is pleased to share that Dr. Chathura Rajapakse recently contributed to an AI skills development initiative conducted for 25 administrative officers of the University of Kelaniya. The programme focused on enhancing AI readiness through practical training and online learning resources, enabling participants to develop the knowledge and skills required to effectively engage with emerging AI technologies. This initiative reflects the University's ongoing commitment to digital transformation and capacity building as it embraces opportunities in the AI era.

As part of the ongoing Knowledge Transfer Session series organized by the Department of Industrial Management, University of Kelaniya, a two-day hands-on workshop on Internet of Things (IoT) and Embedded Systems was successfully conducted on 18th and 19th June for A/L ICT teachers. The session was facilitated by Dr. Keerthi Wijayasiriwardhane, who guided participants through both the theoretical foundations and practical applications of embedded systems and IoT, with a strong emphasis on experiential learning through Arduino-based development. The workshop provided participants with valuable hands-on exposure to embedded systems, IoT architectures, device connectivity, and real-world implementation, helping them bridge theoretical ICT concepts with practical applications. Through interactive activities and practical exercises, the program enhanced participants’ understanding of emerging technologies while highlighting the importance of strong foundational knowledge in embedded systems. We extend our sincere appreciation to Dr. Keerthi Wijayasiriwardhane for sharing his expertise and delivering an engaging learning experience, and to Mr. Samoda Wijesooriya and Ms. Rajani Navoda for their valuable support and contributions in organizing and successfully conducting the workshop.

As part of its ongoing curriculum review and enhancement process, the Department of Industrial Management, University of Kelaniya, has commenced a series of industry consultations to better understand current practices, emerging trends, and the skills expected from future graduates. The first consultation was held with DirectFN, where the Department representatives, Dr. Dilani Wickramaarachchi, Dr. Chathura Rajapakse, Dr. Amila Withanaarachchi, and Mr. Dinesh Asanka, engaged in a highly insightful discussion with industry professionals Mr. Satheeq Hassan, Mr. Lakshitha Surasinghe, Mr. Umesh Wanigasekera, Mr. Lahiru Prasad, Mr. Tharinda Hettiarachchige, Mr. Malidu Jayasundara, and Mr. Keith Abeyratne. The discussion covered a wide range of topics, including the application of Artificial Intelligence in software development, quality assurance, database management, and cybersecurity, while also exploring the competencies, technical skills, and professional attributes expected from graduates entering the workforce. The valuable insights gained through this consultation will contribute significantly to ensuring that the Department’s curriculum remains relevant, industry-aligned, and future-ready. The Department of Industrial Management, University of Kelaniya, proudly congratulates the graduates of the Master of Data Analytics (MDA) 2024 Batch on their successful completion of the programme and graduation at the University of Kelaniya Convocation 2026. The MDA programme commenced on 30th March 2024, and the graduates successfully fulfilled all programme requirements by 11th May 2025, with the degree effective date of 1st June 2025. Designed to be completed within a single academic year (approximately 14 months), the programme provides working professionals and graduates with advanced knowledge and practical skills in data analytics through a flexible and industry-relevant learning experience. A total of 39 students successfully completed the programme and graduated, including eight graduates who were awarded Merit Passes in recognition of their exceptional academic achievement, marking another significant milestone in the continued growth and success of the MDA programme. The Department extends its sincere appreciation to the Programme Coordinator, Dr. Chathura Rajapakse, the academic staff, industry experts, Programme Assistant, Ms. Piyumi Karunarathna, and all support staff whose dedication and commitment contributed to the success of the programme and its graduates. As part of the ongoing Knowledge Transfer Session series organized by the Department of Industrial Management, University of Kelaniya, a hands-on workshop on the effective use of AI tools in software development projects was recently conducted by Mr. Chamil Yahampath, Mr. Tharuka Fernando, and Mr. Udavith Reshanjana. Using Antigravity as the primary platform, participants explored how AI can be integrated into software development to enhance productivity, decision-making, and solution quality while maintaining the importance of engineering expertise. The session examined AI-dependent, software engineering-aware, and engineering-led approaches to development through practical exercises and project-based activities, highlighting how different AI interaction strategies influence software design and problem-solving. The workshop emphasized that AI serves as a powerful enabler of critical thinking, adaptive learning, and innovation, reinforcing the importance of preparing future professionals who can effectively combine technical expertise with human judgment and creativity.

The Department of Industrial Management, University of Kelaniya, successfully inaugurated the Master of Data Analytics (MDA) 2026 Intake on 28 March 2026, welcoming 106 selected candidates from a highly competitive pool of over 160 applicants. Designed for graduates from both computing and non-computing backgrounds, the programme aims to develop expertise in statistics, programming, machine learning, and advanced analytics to meet the growing demand for data-driven professionals. The ceremony was graced by Senior Professor P. A. Paranagama, Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, and Professor W. A. P. J. Premaratne, Dean of the Faculty of Science, alongside the academic staff of the Department. The event marked the beginning of an exciting academic journey for the new cohort and highlighted the University’s continued commitment to advancing excellence in data analytics education.

The 9th International Research Conference on Smart Computing and Systems Engineering (SCSE 2026), organized by the Department of Industrial Management at the University of Kelaniya, was successfully held on 26th March 2026 at the department auditorium, marking a significant milestone in advancing interdisciplinary research and academic collaboration. The conference received 682 submissions, of which 217 outstanding research papers were accepted through a rigorous review process with a 32% acceptance rate and presented across eight specialized tracks covering areas such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, innovation, information technology, education, and supply chain management. The inauguration was graced by Senior Professor Nilanthi De Silva, Vice-Chancellor; Professor Jeewantha Premaratne, Dean of the Faculty of Science; Dr. Sudath Senarath, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities; Senior Professor Gihan Dias, Professor at the University of Moratuwa and Keynote Speaker; and Dr. Ruvan Weerasinghe, Honorary Chair of SCSE 2026, along with other esteemed guests whose presence added great significance to the occasion. The conference was generously supported by IEEE, IEEE Sri Lanka Section, IEEE Computer Society, IEEE Industrial Electronics Society, IEEE Industry Applications Society, and Huawei, whose invaluable contributions enabled a highly enriching experience for participants, while the event was attended by academic and non-academic staff of the Faculty of Science as well as presenters, ultimately positioning SCSE 2026 as a convergence of ideas, a catalyst for collaboration, and a step forward in shaping the future of smart computing and systems engineering.

Under the prestigious banner of Exposition, the Industrial Management Science Students' Association (IMSSA) at the University of Kelaniya proudly celebrated the successful launch of the 21st edition of Exposition Magazine, continuing its tradition of bridging academic research with industrial excellence through the collective efforts of speakers, industry partners, and dedicated students. This year’s initiatives included the EDIFY Article Competition with participants from multiple universities, the first-ever YouTube Podcast Series featuring industry leaders sharing insights on innovation and career resilience, and the Industrial Week Career Fair connecting students with professional opportunities. The week concluded with an inspiring keynote by Mr. Dhanika Perera, Founder and CEO of Bhasha Lanka, alongside a panel discussion on “The Next Five Years of Tech Work: Surviving the AI Shock and Building Career Resilience,” featuring Dr. Ruchira Wijesena, Mr. Kasun Dananjaya Delgolla, and Mr. Rohan Fernando, whose insights highlighted the future of work in a rapidly evolving technological landscape, while the achievement ultimately stands as a testament to the passion and commitment of IMSSA students.

Four talented students from the Department of Industrial Management proudly represented the University of Kelaniya at “Vibrance,” the cultural program organized by VIT Chennai under the ODYSSEY event.

With the team name “SheSeya,” Level 3 students Lakshika Shankari and Oshani Kavindya, together with Level 2 students Nadeesha Kavindi and Wasana Senarath, delivered a captivating performance blending Sri Lankan traditional dance with Indian classical elements.

In addition to their performance, the team also received the opportunity to take part in a series of programs conducted at VIT Chennai, making it a memorable and enriching experience for the students and a proud moment for the University of Kelaniya

The Colours Award Ceremony for the years 2024 and 2025 was held at the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, celebrating perseverance, discipline, and excellence in sport. The event recognized student-athletes who have demonstrated outstanding commitment, resilience, and dedication while successfully balancing both academic and sporting responsibilities. Among the awardees were Hiruni De Joedth, Dekum Diwanjana, Binaru Ranasinghe, Ravindu Atthanayake, Nihim Abhayarathne, Sarafath Ahamed, and Shalika Ramanayaka, undergraduates of the Department of Industrial Management. They were awarded Colours in recognition of their consistent effort, quiet determination, and exemplary sportsmanship. Their achievements reflect the enduring principle that success in sport is measured not only by victories, but also by the character, discipline, and perseverance developed throughout the journey. The Colours awarded symbolize countless hours of training, challenges overcome with courage, and a continued commitment to excellence. The Department proudly congratulates these students and celebrates their inspiring accomplishments.

At the Vice Chancellor’s Awards Ceremony 2025, the Department of Industrial Management, Faculty of Science, University of Kelaniya, received multiple prestigious recognitions for excellence in digital innovation, research, and academic service. The official department website was awarded 1st Place as the Department with the Best Website in the University 2025, reflecting the collective effort of the web development team, with foundational guidance provided by former Web Masters Prof. Ruwan Wickramaarachchi and Mr. Dinesh Asanka, development carried out by junior lecturers Ms. Jayamini Kariyapperuma, Ms. Chamoda Paranawithana, Ms. Piyumi Nisansala, and Ms. Kasuni Jayamaha, content contributions by Ms. Tharuvi Nanayakkarawasam and Ms. Yudheera Karunaratne, and continued support from the current Web Master Ms. Sammani Hewage. In addition, Dr. Chathumi Ayanthi Kavirathna was awarded 1st Place as the Most Outstanding Young Researcher of the University of Kelaniya, while Prof. A.P. Ruwan Wickramaarachchi received a Silver-Plated Medal for 30 Years of Continuous and Meritorious Service, and Outstanding Researcher – Merit Awards were presented to Dr. Thilini Mahanama, Prof. Janaka Wijayanayake, Dr. Chathura Rajapaksha, Mr. Dinesh Asanka, and Ms. Chalani Oruthotaarachchi, collectively highlighting the Department’s strong commitment to academic excellence, research impact, teamwork, and a high-quality digital presence. The Department of Industrial Management successfully conducted a 10-day Orientation Program for the 2024/2025 new intake, aimed at easing students’ transition into university life while fostering academic awareness, personal development, and peer engagement.

The program began with an Inauguration Ceremony, sessions for parents and students, and mentor group meetings. Subsequent days included ice-breaking activities, awareness sessions, creative exercises, a campus tour, and a scavenger hunt to build confidence and teamwork. Students also participated in an Outbound Training program conducted by The Unlock Team (Pvt) Ltd and a full-day Language Camp to strengthen communication skills.

Further sessions covered student resources, goal setting and vision building, guest lectures, interactions with early-career academic staff, and introductions to clubs and societies. External expert sessions, a Game Day, Yoga and sports introductions, and recreational activities added balance to the program. The orientation concluded with a gender diversity awareness session and a student talent show titled “The Originals.”

Overall, the program provided a well-rounded foundation, helping new students build connections, develop essential skills, and confidently begin their academic journey at the Department of Industrial Management.

Researchers from the University of Kelaniya showcased two impactful studies at the International Conference on Advances in ICT for Emerging Regions (ICTer) 2025, held at Marino Beach Hotel, Colombo, Sri Lanka. The first study, titled “Early Detection and Severity Assessment of Dysgraphia in Sinhala-Speaking Children Using a Multi-Modal Machine Learning Approach,” presents Sri Lanka’s first multi-modal sequential machine learning framework  to detect and assess the severity of dysgraphia among Sinhala-speaking children. This pioneering work integrates handwriting, visual, and linguistic data to enable early screening and intervention, contributing to improved child learning outcomes. The study was authored by Ms. Sandushi Weraduwa, Mr. Dinesh Asanka, and Dr. Thilini Mahanama from the University of Kelaniya, in collaboration with Dr. Swarna Wijeathunge, Consultant Psychiatrist at the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service, Lady Ridgeway Hospital.

The second research, “Identifying Three-Band Hyperspectral Composites That Outperform RGB for Floating Plastic Detection,” explores advanced hyperspectral imaging techniques to enhance the detection of floating plastic waste, contributing to environmental sustainability. This study was conducted by Mr. Savindu Harith, Dr. Chathura Rajapakse, Dr. Thilini Mahanama, and Mr. Dinesh Asanka from the University of Kelaniya, in collaboration with Dr. Shanaka Kristombu Baduge, Dr. Gihan Ruwanpathirana, and Dr. Sadeep Thilakarathna from the University of Melbourne.

These outstanding contributions highlight the University of Kelaniya’s commitment to promoting innovation and impactful interdisciplinary research in collaboration with leading local and international partners.

The Industrial Management Science Students’ Association (IMSSA) of the Department of Industrial Management, University of Kelaniya, in collaboration with the Ministry of Science and Technology, successfully concluded the National Hackathon Series Finals at Waters Edge, Battaramulla. The event featured HackXJr 8.0 and HackX10.0, showcasing innovative school-level and inter-university solutions. HackXJr winners were Cinna Tech Five (Ga/Kiripedda Junior College), Future X (Urapola Central College, Gampaha), and Lunaris (Royal Institute International School), while HackX10.0 was won by Hydrotech, Itself (both from the University of Kelaniya), and Codex (Nebula Institute of Technology). The ceremony was attended by foreign representatives, dignitaries from the Republic of Congo, Minister of Science and Technology Prof. Chrishantha Abeysena, academic staff, officials, teachers, parents, and students. The department extends its congratulations to all participants and expresses special appreciation to Dr. Amila Withanaarachchi and IMSSA members for making the event a resounding success. 

The inauguration ceremony of the 2025 intake of the Master of Science in Management and Information Technology program, offered by the Department of Industrial Management, University of Kelaniya, was successfully held on November 1, 2025, at the Auditorium of the Department of Industrial Management. The event marked the beginning of a transformative academic journey for the new learning partners, one that fosters innovation, leadership, and interdisciplinary learning. The ceremony was graced by Senior Professor Sudath R. D. Kalingamudali, Dean of the Faculty of Science, together with faculty members and the dedicated staff of the Department.

The IM Diwali festival was recently celebrated at the Department of Industrial Management, bringing together both undergraduates and staff members for an evening filled with joy, culture, and togetherness. Let the light of Diwali illuminate our hearts and minds. The event showcased vibrant activities inspired by rich Hindu traditions, where students and staff shared their talents, making the celebration truly memorable. Traditional Hindu meals were also served, adding authentic flavor to the evening and refreshing everyone with the warmth of Diwali. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated and made this day so special! 

The Department of Industrial Management proudly celebrates the success of People Power 360°, a vibrant and experiential event organized by our very own level two students  held under the course Human Resource Management and Leadership Communication. This event was a way of  bridging  theory and practice where leadership, communication, and HRM concepts met creativity, collaboration, and real-world experience. Throughout the event , students engaged in a series of immersive activities that brought out the essence of people management from thought-provoking leadership dialogues and dynamic press simulations to interactive HR challenges and personality-based team relays. Each experience reflected the enthusiasm, teamwork, and innovation of our undergraduates, underscoring how emotional intelligence, communication, and strategic thinking shape today’s workplaces.  A special note of gratitude goes to Dr. Prabhashini Wijewantha, the lecturer in charge of the module, whose guidance, encouragement, and vision made this event a meaningful and memorable learning experience for all. 

On October 8, 2025, the Department of Industrial Management hosted a memorable evening titled “Geethathma” (meaning the soul of song), graced by the renowned lyricist Bandula Nanayakkarawasam, whose heartfelt creations have touched generations of Sri Lankans. Though it was his first visit to the department, his legacy continues through his daughter, Ms. Tharuvi Nanayakkarawasam, a valued member of the department. The event, attended by Senior Professor Sudath R. D. Kalingamudali, Dean of the Faculty of Science, along with senior and junior academic staff, brought together academic and non-academic members and students from across the university. Both staff and students took the stage to perform, adding warmth and vibrance to the evening. Mr. Nanayakkarawasam reminded the audience that every song carries the essence of real-life experiences, weaving this message through his soulful performances. The evening concluded with hearts full and spirits uplifted, marking yet another unforgettable moment in the department’s calendar, a celebration of humanity, creativity, and connection beyond the realm of science.

The Department of Industrial Management, Faculty of Science, University of Kelaniya, proudly launched Celsius Orbit, Sri Lanka’s first AI-driven event ecosystem, developed by Level 4 undergraduates. Held on 30th September 2025, the event marked a milestone in academia-driven innovation and youth entrepreneurship. Celsius Orbit revolutionizes event management by connecting organizers, participants, and vendors through an intelligent digital platform offering tools for event creation, promotion, payments, and analytics. Graced by academics, industry representatives, and the founders of Celsius IT Solutions, Chamil Yahampath, Pathum Lakruwan, and Sonal Paranawithana, the launch highlighted the entrepreneurial spirit of DIM students and their contribution to real-world innovation.

The Department of Industrial Management, University of Kelaniya, has launched the AI@IM initiative to bring together students passionate about Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. Spearheaded by Dr. Dilani Wickramaarachchi, Dr. Chathura Rajapakse, Dr. Thilini Mahanama, and Mr. Dinesh Asanka, along with a dedicated student team, the initiative kicked off with the PyData Sri Lanka Meetup 2025 and continues through workshops, peer-led sessions, real-world projects, research, and networking activities, aiming to inspire and empower the next generation of AI innovators. The event featured expert insights and a panel discussion on bridging the gap between academia and industry. A special thanks goes to the speakers, panelists, and organizing team, especially Dr. Chathura Rajapakse, for their dedication. Level 1 and 2 students of the Department of Industrial Management had the privilege of participating in an eye-opening session conducted by one of Sri Lanka’s most respected voices, none other than Mr. Peter D'Almeida. As a  visionary tech entrepreneur, accomplished actor, and dedicated social activist, Mr. D’Almeida brought a wealth of knowledge and perspective to the conversation. The session, titled “Unlocking the Potential for the Modern Workplace,” explored a topic that is not just relevant but essential. As we navigate an era defined by rapid transformation, understanding how to unleash individual and collective potential has never been more important.
