Researchers from the University of Kelaniya presented two impactful studies at the International Conference on Advances in ICT for Emerging Regions (ICTer) 2025, held at Marino Beach Hotel, Colombo. The first study, “Early Detection and Severity Assessment of Dysgraphia in Sinhala-Speaking Children Using a Multi-Modal Machine Learning Approach,” introduced Sri Lanka’s first AI-based framework to identify and assess dysgraphia in Sinhala-speaking children, aiming to support early screening and child well-being. The research was conducted by Ms. Sandushi Weraduwa, Mr. Dinesh Asanka, Dr. Thilini Mahanama, and Dr. Swarna Wijeathunge. The second study, “Identifying Three-Band Hyperspectral Composites That Outperform RGB for Floating Plastic Detection,” focused on improving environmental monitoring through advanced hyperspectral imaging. The research was carried out by Mr. Savindu Harith, Dr. Chathura Rajapakse, Dr. Thilini Mahanama, Mr. Dinesh Asanka, and collaborators from the University of Melbourne. These presentations highlight the University’s growing research excellence and commitment to innovation through local and international collaborations.

The Department of Industrial Management successfully inaugurated the 2025 intake of the Master of Science in Management and Information Technology program on November 1, 2025, at the department auditorium. The Department of Industrial Management proudly launched Celsius Orbit, Sri Lanka’s first AI-driven event ecosystem, developed by Level 4 undergraduates. The platform connects event organizers, participants, and vendors through intelligent digital tools for event creation, promotion, and analytics. The launch ceremony, graced by academics, industry representatives, and the founders of Celsius IT Solutions, celebrated student-driven innovation and entrepreneurship at DIM.

The Department of Industrial Management is one of the very first departments in the Science faculty which was established with the aim of providing education, research, and training in the field of Industrial Management to mould science students into professionals who are well-versed in both Management and IT streams.
The Department of Industrial Management offers two Bachelor degree programs: Bachelor of Science Honours in Management and Information Technology (MIT), and Information Technology (IT). However, passing all the IT modules in the first year is a prerequisite for pursuing the Bachelor's degree in IT. The students can either opt to get a general degree after completing three years, or complete four years to get an honors degree.
Students who have successfully completed their A/Ls in the Science stream and achieved a minimum grade of "C" in one of the following subjects: Higher Mathematics, Combined Mathematics, Mathematics, or Physics are eligible to apply.
The Department of Industrial Management offers three Master degree programs. The Master of Information Technology programme is designed for graduates desiring to enhance their competencies when pursuing a career in Information Technology and for those graduates in other functional areas desiring to learn Information Technology to enhance their ability to provide effective and efficient solutions to their stakeholders. The Master of Data Analytics programme is designed for graduates desiring to enhance their competencies in data analytics concepts, tools, and technologies for delivering data-driven solutions to diverse business problems in the industry and society.
Graduates have a wide range of career options, including roles in operations management, supply chain management, software development, project management, system administration, network engineering and more. Overall, the department's strong academic foundation equips students for success in various industries.
